Traveling to St. John is a little different than most Caribbean islands, but the journey is all part of the adventure. Around here, “t’ings” simply means “things” — a small touch of island charm. Here are the essentials to help make your arrival smooth and stress-free.
Getting Here:
There’s No Airport on St. John
You’ll fly into Cyril E. King Airport (STT) and take a ferry to St. John. There are two main routes:
Option 1: Crown Bay → The Creek in Cruz Bay
- 5-minute taxi from the airport
- ~40-minute ferry ride
- Operated by Inter Island Boat Services
Option 2: Red Hook → Cruz Bay
- ~30-minute taxi from the airport
- ~10-minute ferry ride
- Operated by Varlack Ventures
Time and cost are similar for both. We often prefer the shorter taxi ride, but your choice depends on ferry schedules at that time of the year.
Important: Taxis on St. Thomas accept cash only.
No Passport, No Problem
No passport is required for U.S. citizens traveling to St. John — it’s a U.S. territory. You’ll only need one if you plan to visit the British Virgin Islands (BVI) during your stay.

You’ll be supported by our exceptional property manager! Our local property manager has lived on St. John for decades and knows the villa (and the island) inside and out. He lives nearby, responds quickly, and ensures everything at the villa runs smoothly.

Do I Need a Car?
Astral Villa sits in a beautiful, private hillside location with sweeping views, and you’ll need a 4WD vehicle to reach it comfortably. We’ll provide some car rental recommendations after booking.
Island Etiquette
Life on St. John moves at a relaxed pace, and a little local courtesy goes a long way. Islanders traditionally greet one another with a friendly “good morning, good day, good nite,” and visitors are warmly encouraged to do the same.
When heading into town, please remember that swimwear is for the beach. In restaurants, shops, and public areas, light cover-ups and casual attire are appreciated and help you blend in respectfully with the local community.
